Wine Advocate – December 30, 2016, Issue 228
CHÂTEAU DE SAINT COSME Gigondas Hominis Fides 2015 – 97-99 “A wine that might rival the 2007, the 2015 Gigondas Hominis Fides (100% Grenache from sandy soils located just down from the estate) offers full-bodied, massive and unctuous notes of currants, crushed rocks, smoked meats and licorice. Fermented with 100% whole clusters and aged mostly in older barrels, this sensational Gigondas might end up being the wine of the vintage, from the entire Southern Rhone valley! It has masses of tannin, so it’s going to require patience.”
CHÂTEAU DE SAINT COSME Gigondas Le Poste 2015 – 94-96 “The 2015 Gigondas le Poste is a classic expression of this vineyard and shows the more elegant, perfumed style that always comes from this site. Violets, flowers, raspberries, blueberries and green herbs all emerge from this full-bodied, lengthy and impeccably balanced Gigondas that has ultra-fine tannin and perfectly integrated acidity. Brought up just like the other two single vineyard releases, this beauty will be more accessible in its youth, yet I suspect it will age just as long.”
CHÂTEAU DE SAINT COSME Gigondas Valbelle 2015 – 94-96 “Incorporating 10% Syrah, the Grenache-dominated 2015 Gigondas Cuvee Valbelle is another heavenly wine from Louis Barruol. Full-bodied, seamless and elegant, with lots of crème de cassis, crushed flowers, incense and white pepper, it has a touch less mid-palate depth than the single vineyards, but is impeccably balanced and will have two decades of longevity.”
CHÂTEAU DE SAINT COSME Gigondas 2015 – 91-93 “Starting with the 2015 Gigondas Classique from Barruol, this blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre and the rest Syrah and Cinsault will be a wine that readers will want to stockpile. Full-bodied, rich, beautifully textured and layered, with killer notes of crème de cassis, white pepper, spice and garrigue, it’s a classic Gigondas that will drink well for 15+ years.”
CHÂTEAU DE SAINT COSME Côte Rôtie 2015 – 91-93+ points “He also makes a traditional style of Côte Rôtie that’s not destemmed and is brought up in barrel (I believe mostly older barrels). The 2015 Côte Rôtie is loaded with gamy and meaty characteristics, as well as blackcurrants, raspberries, olive tapenade and loads of peppery spice. Full-bodied, layered and beautifully ripe, forget bottles for 4-5 years and enjoy over the following decade or more.”
CHÂTEAU DE SAINT COSME St. Joseph 2015 – 91-93 points “Another terrific Northern Rhône from Louis is the 2015 Saint Joseph, which comes all from granite terroirs and was aged in barrel. Plums, cassis, black raspberry and graphite characteristics emerge from this rich, full-bodied, impressively concentrated red that has present, yet sweet tannin. It will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring and shine for a decade.”
CHÂTEAU DE SAINT COSME Condrieu 2015 – 91-93 points “Most people don’t know it, but Saint Cosme’s Louis Barruol makes a terrific white wine from his estate in Gigondas, and that winemaking talent carries over to his release from Condrieu. His 2015 Condrieu is a beautifully perfumed, richly textured, pure and classic white that offers abundant notes of tangerines, flower oil and buttered citrus. It has juicy acidity and a great finish, and will drink nicely for 3-5 years.”
CHÂTEAU DE SAINT COSME Crozes Hermitage 2015 – 90-92 points
“The 2015 Crozes Hermitage shows how good this vintage was for the Crozes appellation. It offers gorgeous notes of plum sauce, blackberry jam, crushed rocks, pepper and violets in a medium to full-bodied, fresh, focused, impeccably balanced style. I love its fruit and this rocking effort will drink nicely in its youth and keep through 2025.”
